Life Story

Raised on a farm in Checotah, Oklahoma, Carrie began singing in the church at the age of 3. At 13, she caught the attention of Capitol Records and nearly signed a contract—but things fell through (as they so often do in the cutthroat world of adolescent country music). In the summer of 2004, while a student at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, Carrie traveled to St. Louis to audition for the fourth season of American Idol. Eight months and roughly a billion auditions later, she became one of the show’s final three contestants. On March 22, 2005, Carrie belted a powerful version of Heart’s ’80s hit “Alone,” and Simon Cowell predicted that Underwood would both win the competition and outsell every previous Idol competitor—all the while propping up his biceps with his fists. On May 25th, Carrie defeated Bo Bice to claim the title of American Idol 2005.After that, things got sweeter. Her debut album, Some Hearts, became the fastest-selling debut country album in Nielsen SoundScan history, has been certified seven-time platinum, yielded five number one hits (for songs like “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” “Before He Cheats” and “Don’t Forget to Remember Me”) and garnered two Grammy Awards. She also performed on Saturday Night Live (Kristen Wiig), and was voted “World’s Sexiest Vegetarian” on 2 occasions by PETA and “Sexiest Female Musician” by Victoria’s Secret (although what do they know about sexiness. Really?). Recently, Carrie cut a second album, Carnival Ride, and she recorded a song and filmed a video for the Disney movie Enchanted (Amy Adams). She was recently linked with Gossip Girl actor Chase Crawford, but they have since gone their own ways. She is currently single and available guys. Only great guys who don't think that they are need apply.On March 15th, 2008, after her performance of I Told You So on the Grand Ole Opry, Randy Travis came out onto the stage and surprised her by asking her if she would like to become the newest member of the Grand Ole Opry. She accepted, and was inducted by the best selling artist in music history, Garth Brooks, on May 10th, 2008.
