Naomi Watts is a British born, Australian raised actress known for her roles in The Ring and King Kong, and her nude roles in Mulholland Drive and 21 Grams.
Life storyWatts was born in Shoreham, Kent, England, daughter of antiques dealer “Miv” Watts, and Pink Floyd sound engineer Peter Watts. How an antiques dealer and a roadie came together in coital bliss is beyond us. But stranger things have happened.
After her father’s death, Naomi and her mother moved to Wales. Watts described her mother as a hippie “with passive-aggressive tendencies" and no money. A hippy with no money? Fine. A passive-aggressive hippie with no money? Trouble. During a trip to Australia, her mother became convinced it was "the land of opportunities" after having seen a tourism poster, and moved the family to Sydney in 1982.
In Sydney, Watts attended several acting schools (and in the very first lesson in, she met Nicole Kidman, who is to this day her best friend). It is likely she knows much more about Tom Cruise than she would care to.
Finding quality roles in the Hollywood system at first proved difficult for Watts. She appeared in the short-lived series Sleepwalkers and numerous B-list productions such as films like Children of the Corn IV. The natural step in a career full of creepy films was to then work with David Lynch. She starred in his highly acclaimed Mulholland Drive. The film makes no sense, and that usually translates to awards, which Naomi won for the role.
In 2002, she starred in one of the biggest box office hits of that year, the English language remake of the Japanese horror film, "The Ring". This film made more sense than Mullholland Drive. And more money. But not as many awards. This led to more high-profile roles for Naomi, in films like I Heart Huckabees, King Kong, 21 Grams, Le Divorce, The Painted Veil, and Eastern Promises, in which she co-starred with Viggo Mortensen, who shared the screen with his penis during a bizarre nude fight scene.
